Visualising the actin cytoskeleton.
The actin cytoskeleton is a dynamic filamentous network whose formation and remodeling underlies the fundamental processes of cell motility and shape determination. To serve these roles, different compartments of the actin cytoskeleton engage in forming specific coupling sites between neighbouring cells and with the underlying matrix, which themselves serve signal transducing functions. In this...
متن کاملThe actin cytoskeleton has an active role in the electrotransfer of plasmid DNA in mammalian cells.
Electrotransfer of molecules is a well established technique which finds extensive use for gene transfer and holds great promise for anticancer treatment. Despite its widespread application, the mechanisms governing the entry of DNA into the cell and its intracellular trafficking are not yet known. The aim of this study is to unravel the role of the actin cytoskeleton during gene electrotransfe...
متن کاملThe Bacterial Actin Cytoskeleton
M icrobial shape, long used as a taxonomic criterion, is genetically determined. But how DNA sequence information is translated into morphology is a seminal question still without a complete answer for any microorganism. Recently, however, when investigators discovered that actin-like proteins are involved in determining bacterial cell shape, they revolutionized the field. This insight provides...
متن کاملMicrometric Growth of V2O5Hexagonal Nano-plates as an Active Material for Lithium Ion Battery Cathode Electrode
This manuscript reports the synthesis of V2O5 nanostructures using reflux method, without using additives such as surface reactants. The influence of reaction parameters like temperature and concentration on the growth of nanostructures have been investigated. It has been observed that the nanostructures are formed with a hexagonal nano-plate morphology, grown from a common core. The diameter o...
متن کاملThe actin cortex as an active wetting layer.
Using active gel theory we study theoretically the properties of the cortical actin layer of animal cells. The cortical layer is described as a non-equilibrium wetting film on the cell membrane. The actin density is approximately constant in the layer and jumps to zero at its edge. The layer thickness is determined by the ratio of the polymerization velocity and the depolymerization rate of actin.
